Last week, during our Tuesday night Bible study, I heard a new phrase: “undiscovered continents of spiritual living.” My mind and heart were struck with the question “what undiscovered continents of spiritual living” does God have for me???
Too many years, I sought a spiritual life that felt like I was only keeping my head above water; I worked hard to not drown in the sinful world around me. I found that kind of spiritual life to be boring; it was all struggle, with no joy and little satisfaction. A life of “spiritual survival” is like eating dry crackers and drinking tepid water – it is possible to live, but the life brings limited satisfaction and very little pleasure. For me “spiritual survival” didn’t last long. Too often, I failed to look for God’s leadership and I gave up the battle against sin.
Recently, John and I visited Peru. The trip allowed me to visit, for the first time ever, the continent of South America. I saw the Andean Mountains. I met people who had histories and lives very different from mine. And, at every step of the way, I saw God. He was there in the cathedrals built to worship Him, in the people who were created in His likeness, in the beauty of the world He created. South America was a new continent for me to explore, but it pales in comparison to the new spiritual continents God has ready for me.
Being saved from sin brings amazing freedom. But, salvation is not the end – there is so much more for us. We don’t need to stop dreaming! We can live with full confidence that God has miracles today and tomorrow for us. We have a hope and a future!!
What spiritual continents are in your future? Are you bored with being at the same, old place, spiritually? It’s Easter Week – time to make a change. Rather than trying to simply survive in the sinful world, why not step forward on the journey God has for you? Are you ready to step up your spiritual game? Do you want to go to that “next level” with God?
Today, look at your surroundings, praise God no matter what, and talk with God about your heart’s desire to move forward on the path He has for you. Then, get ready to start a fantastic, new journey!!!
“Though the cherry trees don’t blossom and the strawberries don’t ripen, though the apples are worm-eaten and the wheat fields stunted, though the sheep pens are sheepless and the cattle barns empty, I’m singing joyful praise to God. I’m turning cartwheels of joy to my Savior God. Counting on God’s Rule to prevail, I take heart and gain strength. I run like a deer. I feel like I’m king of the mountain!” (Habakkuk 3:18-19, The Message)
